TRANSPORT - development of Ridgmont Station on current Marston Vale line is key

04

Full text:

I am responding to the above consultation as a member of the English Regional Transport Association(ERTA),which,as you might already know, is a voluntary membership-based,pro-public transport improvement association with its main projects initially in the Bedfordshire and surrounding regional areas but its remit has since increased since several of its projects have a nation-wide positive benefit and impact.
ERTA Website: https://ertarail.com/

I now make the following comments:
East - West Rail Link:
The proposed development of Ridgmont Station on the current Marston Vale Line is of utmost importance, since it will be used for the forthcoming East-West fast services, and that station must be provided with bus connections plus decent pedestrian and cycle access.
Similarly,Millbrook Station(Grade II listed - for use of Marston Vale local services)must also be provided with decent pedestrian and cycle access and with bus connections. If any bus connections serve these stations already, there must be more including at least one bus service to Wixams from both these stations.Meanwhile, incidentally, there should not be a station at Wixams(which I gather may be just outside your area) on the East - West Rail, since ERTA advocates that the line's train services must serve Bedford Midland station via the town's St.John's station.
An interchange station proposed at Sandy with the East Coast Main Line is of utmost importance - indeed the eastern section of the East - West Rail(Bedford - Cambridge)should use the old track-bed as much as possible,of which most of it lies within your area.
The current all-stations Marston Vale service should also be extended to Milton Keynes Central.

Midland Main Line/Thameslink:
ERTA advocates the re-opening of Ampthill Station, which had closed more than 50 years ago.The new station should have staggered platforms or land-access issues with entrances and exits both sides of the Midland Main Line and via a pedestrian/cycle exit south of industrial estate into Froghall Road for Redbourne School and East Flitwick which aligns to Froghall Road and A507 roundabout .
Also,at Flitwick Station there should be a road crossing from the footbridge over the road to the Swan Pub for safer pedestrian access.
Furthermore, there should be a station at Wixams on that route.

Pedestrian footpaths/cycleways:
There should be new pedestrian footpaths/cycleways in the Stewartby area/Marston Vale Forest .Meanwhile there must be greater protection of the chimneys of the adjacent Stewartby Brickworks.

Roads:
The following proposals should not go ahead - Oxford-Cambridge Expressway and A6-M1 Link Road. They would not solve traffic problems and in fact will bring in more traffic, which would be contradictory to your Council's commitment to reduce CO2 emissions;furthermore traffic increase will in turn increase air pollution which is already at critical levels.

Buses:
The bus shelter in Flitwick along the A5120 Ampthill Road close to the railway station and backing on to the railway line should be cleaned up and up-graded with better information with Real-Time Information(RTI) or similar, and later buses linking Flitwick station and Ampthill.

Important Countryside Gaps:
These are also of utmost importance,in particular CG4(land North of Sandy)and CG20(land West of Potton)since these would adjoin the old track-bed of the Bedford-Sandy-Cambridge line which is intended to be incorporated into the East-West Rail Link.
