Indoor Leisure Facilities - Draft Strategy & Action Plan

Representation ID: 14814

Received: 17/11/2020

Respondent: Mrs Amanda Gibson

Representation Summary:

Based on the assessment swimming pools are operating at capacity. This is an activity that all ages and families participate in. If CBC want to increase activity then investing in more swimming pools would make sense. Leisure Centres that include both gyms and swimming have higher appeal and would increase the value of paying for membership for users.

Maintaining existing school facilities to ensure that all students are able to swim. This is a life skill that may one day save their life and should be mandatory on the school curriculum

Respondent: Mr Roger Seldon

Representation Summary:

As a regular user of Tiddenfoot swimming, and variable base pools I believe that the current facilities are inadequate and a second pool must be built on a site on the other side of town. For example near Vandyke school. I have great difficulty in booking sessions for Aqua Aerobics, and I know these classes are extremely valuable for many elderly people. The swimming pool is often overcrowded and therefore unpleasant to swim in.

Consult with disabled swimmers before designing any new disabled changing rooms. Provide a competition pool in Houghton Regis. Don't build pools with shallow ends. No 20 Meter 4 lane pools

Full text:

I am 76 year old swimmer and swim 5times a week. I am also disabled and use a wheelchair. I would like to make three comments. Firstly, I do not believe that you consult sufficiently over the design of disabled changing facilities. I don't know who advises you but they always seem to get it wrong. The assumption in your design appears to be that disabled swimmers come with an attendant. No. They don't. We need shower curtains, benches and drainage in the right location. We need clean rooms and ones which only disabled swimmers can access. I have a longer list, but my point is: ask disabled swimmers what they need, not disabled advisors who have never swum and worse still, architects following outdated advice. My second point is to ask you not to build any more swimming pools with shallow ends that are so shallow you can't turn properly. Finally, I don't see the point in building any four lane or 20 meter pools. For lap swimmers they are useless. Can I also ask you to think about providing at least one pool where competitions can be held. Dunstable isn't suitable but you could ensure that the new pool in Houghton Regis is.

Representation Summary:

Shefford has grown dramatically in the last few years. There are many affordable houses that have been built where residents don’t own cars.
I would support building a swimming pool in Shefford as I think it would be well used and a great asset to the village. The other excercise venues are attached to the school and not accessible easily to the general public. In the times we are in now, keeping fit has a major survival benefit and swimming is a great exercise for all ages. Please look again at canvassing support for a pool in Shefford.

Representation Summary:

In considering the redevelopment of swimming pools, would the council consider providing an additional facility with a 3mt deep end.

Robinson pool has a diving pool, but this facility is never available due to the bookings of other swimming clubs and sports.

Not only would this be of benefit to our club, but it would provide a deep water training/learning facility too. Children's lessons would have greater access to deep water so they can learn some of the safe practices related to swimming in deep water.

Hi - I represent Bedford Synchro Club. We have been operating for several years in Bedford and have a broad range of members who travel to Bedford to enjoy the sport. Students travel from Luton, St Neots, Northampton, Milton Keyenes, Biggleswade to train with us. We are the only club in this area. The nearest club to us is Stevenage or Norwich.

We have found it extremely difficult to source swimming facilities which have a pool with sufficient depth to train for this sport, we need a 3mt depth of pool.
We rely totally on the independent school facilities in the area but would much rather support our council services.
